My first new home
by James Ross
I never cared much for swimming at the beach nor in a lake. I never imagined I would have my own swimming area in my own home either.
The day of the closing I did the walk through, went to the closing, drove back to the previous home, and drove the extra large moving truck over to the new home. The garage door was opened (one car under) and then it happened?my first home experience. I found approximately two-and-a-half inches of water throughout the whole downstairs of the home. When the new septic system was installed, the contractor had crushed the drainage pipe causing the water to backup into the garage, then into the finished part of the basement, and of course, then into the two-year-old bathroom completed with a hot tub. Instead of moving in, we spent hours sucking up water.
That same night after the big cleanup, on our second moving run, we turned onto our new street. To my amazement, we witnessed several fire trucks and police vehicles. We thought it was another problem with our new house, but it turned out to be a kitchen fire in a neighbor’s home. Of course, I had to backup the extra large moving truck about a mile, then backing up onto the main street. This was soooo fun.
Mind you, this is my first home that took me over a year to find. One word of advice?never pass papers on a rainy day unless you have a pair of floaties.
